Welcome from the Arifjan Regional Correctional Facility |
| Well, I made it here after without too many problems. |
|
Actually, the flight wasn't so bad, but the waiting 2+ hours at each layover in Frankfurt, Aviano, and Kuwait City was painfully long. I'm getting adjusted here well, and trying to force myself into a schedule to help me recover from the time zone change (+7 hours). I ran 3 miles yesterday morning, and did 4 miles today along with some calisthenics. I have to get up to run no later than 0530 to beat the heat, as the sun rises very early (before 0500!).
Camp Arifjan reminds me a lot of Fort Irwin, with the constant heat and pre-fabricated architectural "style". However, it retains the familiar base camp smell, a strong blend of dust and generator exhaust. This place is plenty big with lots of security. Fortunately, most every building (to include my room and office space) is powerfully air conditioned. I have my own room which I share a bathroom and kitchenette with a suite mate. I have cable TV and a closet. About the only thing I could wish for is in-room internet connectivity, although I have plenty of that in the office. Allegedly, internet in the rooms is in the works, as we're already wired for it. As it is, I'm wiring this off-line to cut-n-paste online later today. There really isn't much to do here other than work, eat, and PT. I'll try to write more about my workspace later, once I've figured it out a little better. The dining facilities here are terrific. I've already done some of my class work in my two graduate classes. I was able to get tuition assistance for the Relational Database class, thanks largely to Laura's behind-the-scenes coordination during my flight day. We were able to defeat the bureaucracy with uncharacteristically little effort. Now I'm just hoping my books get here some time over the next week. I'll try to force myself to write something every day, whether for this site or one of my classes. Thanks again to all for your best wishes and support -- I've gained strength from it all. Please keep in touch. |
