Well, I'm counting down the days (less than a month now) until I get back home to visit my family for two weeks of "R and R" leave.

You sent me to Kuwait!
I've been real busy over the last few months with work and my UMUC graduate school program. I finally finished CSMN618 (Knowledge-Based Systems), the single class I took this semester. I've signed up for CSMN617 (Principles of Programming Languages) for next semester, and I'm considering taking a second class as well. I'm hoping to convince the CSMN617 professor to allow me to substitute a documented web programming project in lieu of the research paper requirement.

I'm excited about my approaching leave period, and I've already completed a few tasks in anticipation -- a redeployment briefing, my mid-tour physical fitness test, and my leave paperwork. Laura and I are working on a tentative "to-do" list, and I've sent a list of requested items to have on hand (cold Shiner being at the top).

Here's some interesting content I've found over the last few weeks:
  • The Biggest Web Design Mistakes of 2004 - Excellent overview of web design and implementation don'ts. I'm happy that this site complies with most, although (sadly) there are still quite a few areas that need work.
  • Meebo web chat client - Completely web-based (and free!) chat client for the major chat services, including AIM/ICQ, Yahoo! Messenger, Jabber/GTalk, and MSN Messenger. As the chat client runs completely within your browser window, it should be completely work-safe (nothing to install on your workstation). If your company's web monitoring blocks the site, try the secure version (https://www.meebo.com). If they block that as well, then they probably have more of a problem with IM as a principle than as a security problem.
  • Military or SWAT hand signals - Hilarious look at military-style hand signals. I take strong exception with the author's asseration that "these are, of course, unofficial," as I think these are the hand signals that we at least should have.
  • The Edge - A fantastic cartoon by SPC Brian Henderson, a very talented Soldier in my unit. A lot of the humor is internal to our organization, but should still hit home for anyone who's required to provide IT support.
  • The Ultimate War Sim - An entertaining suggestion for the ultimate war strategy video game that is clever on many different levels. Caution: lots of profane language and juvenile ranting that may be offensive or NSFW.

Aaron Tippin and I.
Between Laura and I, we've also put a lot of photo content on the site over the last few weeks:
  • Disney World - Jack and Laura's trip to Disney World, along with Laura's cousin Holly, her husband Jeremy, and their son Colin.
  • Halloween 2005 - Trick or Treating with Jack and friends.
  • Thanksgiving 2005 in Tampa - Jack and Laura spend Thanksgiving week with the LaSala Family in Tampa. Abraham is 5, and Elise is 3 (only a month older than Jack).
  • Third 90 days - Images from the third quarter of my Kuwait deployment.
Recent entertainment includes: Hey porter! Hey porter! Would you tell me the time?
How much longer will it be till we cross that Mason Dixon Line?
At daylight would ya tell that engineer to slow it down?
Or better still, just stop the train, cause I wanna look around.

- Johnny Cash, "Hey Porter"

Good travel motto.
